controlling stink bugs in the garden

Post by HUMMER » Sun May 01, 2011 9:19 pm

I know stink bugs are very hard to control, but I think I heard Andre mention something to use in the hole when planting squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelons etc.that would prevent those pesky bugs from attacking my vegetables. I would like to know what it is so they don't damage my vegetable garden this year. Thanks!

I asked Andre about this and he said there isn't anything like you are describing. Since these pests are piercing/sucking insects and they feed on above ground foliage, stems, and fruits, a product such as you are describing would be some type of systemic pesticide. Though there are some promising systemics that are being tested for use against stinkbugs, these systemics would only (probably) be for use on NON-EDIBLE plants. For use in the vegetable garden, the best control measure (aside from knocking them off your plants into a jar of soapy water) would be a spray of Bonide Beetle Killer or Bonide Eight. Always read and follow the label directions.

This website suggests using Bayer Advanced Natrina Home Pest Control to address the stink bug problem. However I checked this product and it does not list Stink Bugs as one of those insects killed or controlled. :? :( I would like to find a product that kills these pesty, irksome bugs!
