Flowering chineese maple care and pruning

Post by etl1269 » Sun Apr 14, 2013 8:08 am

Can't seem to find any information about this maple. We wintered it over in a cool well lit room and watered it once every 6-7 days. It's in an 9" pot and is 3 1/2 ft tall. My plan is to repot it to a 12" wide 12" deep pot and wondering how and when to prune it. When the weather on Long Island warms up I'll put it back outdoors where it gets morning sun only. Bloomed all winter with 1 month period of dropped foliage and few blooms. Long Island N.Y.

Flowering maple or Chinese Bell Flower (Abutilon x hybridum) blooms on growth produced in the current season (new wood) so it is best pruned in spring. You can pinch the branch tips back to promote more branching which will lead to more flower production. The plant as a whole can be cut back by a third if you want to keep it shorter (less leggy) with sturdier branches. You may need to give it a little more sun to get it to bloom better - just keep it partly shaded from the hot afternoon sun.
