Plant ID

Hi,

I live in Dutchess County, NY, zone 6A. I found these plants on my property between two maple trees. They are on slim, non-woody stems, about 8" tall. The leaves sets are between 4 and 6" in diameter. Any idea what they are?

Thanks,
Carol

Mulch

A neighbor is taking down many pine trees. Can I use the shredded material, limbs, needles, etc. as mulch?

Thanks,
Carol

Peach tree

I am in Dutchess County, NY. I have a peach tree in the ground for three years. This year, even though I thinned them, I had a lot of fruit. So much so, the branches bowed down. Now, after harvest, the branches are still bowed. I am afraid with snow cover, they will break. Can I cut the bowed branch...

Plant ID

I'm in Dutchess County, NY. I have this volunteer growing in my compost pile. I have no idea what it is, I don't recall buying any squash or melon that resembles this. Any idea what it is?

Re: Rhubarb and lettuce

The seeds are fresh. I bought them, and they are dated for, this year. I replanted them in a different area and they grew. I thought it was odd that they didn't germinate near the rhubarb.

Rhubarb and lettuce

I'm in Dutchess County, NY. I planted lettuce seeds a few weeks back near a rhubarb plant. Hardly any of the seeds germinated. Do rhubarb and lettuce not like to grow together?
Thanks,
Carol

Tree ID

Hi, I'm in Dutchess County, NY I have a tree my husband is threatening to cut down. I'd rather he didn't because when it's in bloom, it is literally humming with bees. Also, it is right outside my kitchen window and I love watching the birds paying visits. I would rather cut out the dead branches an...

Holding bulbs over winter

I just received a gift of daffodil bulbs and irises. Problem is, in the spring I'm doing a major overhaul on the section of the garden where they would be planted. I have a cold room that is dark and has a temperature range of 36-50, depending on the outdoor temps. Can I hold them there until the ga...

Garlic

I'm in Dutchess County, NY, Zone 6a. I live on a hill. I have a garden that is on a flat plane on the down slope. I've planted garlic there the last couple of years. It grows, but it doesn't get nice, big cloves. The ground is wetter in that area. It's not squishy, but it does stay on the damp side....
